Wearables, 2021-22
Edition 1 and 2
Wearables is part artist’s edition, part fashion label. Produced in limited series, wearables finds inspiration where art meets industry.
The work follows from Sonia Delaunay's 1920s designs that combined modernist art modes with avant-garde costuming, and Ascher Artists' Squares, a 1940s wartime adaptation that would come to enlist artists including Barbara Hepworth, Henri Matisse, and Alexander Calder. Printed fabrics transform the geometric qualities of an image through the drape of a garment. Silk scarves vibrate with graphic motifs that emerge in alternately sharp and shimmering color combinations. Animated in movement, the patterns fold and combine with themselves, producing a tension between the taut regularity of the print and the rippling of the material.
